We’re getting closer! Here in Connecticut, it hit about 60 degrees last weekend! This feels like the longest winter ever (although I vaguely remember saying that last year… and possibly every year before that…) But I have begun to spring clean, and spent a large portion of the weekend switching around my house, trying to un-winter-ize it. It’s right around the corner…
About a year ago, I redid a plain pine bench. It’s great quality – made in Vermont – and extremely sturdy. I painted the top in a dusty blue plaster of paris chalked paint and sketched out a flying swallow silouette, which I painted on. It was springtime and I was sure it would fly out of the shop. Months went by and finally I had to admit defeat. So I moved it to another shop – it was so sweet, it had to sell, right?! Apparently not. I received the message to pick her up again.
I was torn… Facing the thought of stripping it down and starting over just made me sad… But other than the swallow, the rest of it really was kind of boring. I didn’t want it to be perfectly balanced with another swallow on the opposite side, but it did need something. So I taped off some stripes in the same off white as the swallow and painted them on with a foam brush, dabbing not brushing, for a textured grain sack effect. After a little distressing, she was done (again)…
This weekend, she will go back to Rebecca Christine’s Consignment Boutique and hopefully someone will feel Spring in the air!
Please let me know what you think – I appreciate every comment!

I think you did a beautiful paint job and the stripes add a lot of interest. Personally, if I were putting it in my house, I would love the legs in blue as well. I like to mix the wood and paint on some pieces, but for some reason it doesn’t work as well for me on this piece.
Thankv you for the constructive feedback – I was thinking that as well for Plan C. I remember having My dilemma
Oops – wrong button – I remember having trouble deciding whether to paint them initially and at this point no longer have that blue. But hopefully someone loves it this way!
Love your design…as in the previous reply, I too think painted legs would give a sweeter look to your piece. Also, have you considered sanding thru your design…almost fading it out in some areas? I think you would love the softer effect.
Thank you – I did distress it some. Again I will keep it in mind for plan C.
I love everything about it…pinned for inspiration! ~Lisa
Thanks Lisa! Hope all is well!
Another fantastic makeover Delia! So glad you linked it at the DIY Sunday Showcase Party. I’ve also pinned it to our DIY Sunday Showcase Board!
Thanks so much, Marie! Have a wonderful week!
Love the bird you added to the top. Reminds a bit of the Mockingjay icon from The Hunger Games.
Thank you – I drew it myself. 🙂
That looks amazing love the design reminds me of a vintage surfboard!
Thank you – it kind of does, doesn’t it?!
I absolutely LOVE how it turned out, you did an excellent job!! Thanks so much for sharing with us ❤
Thank you Fotini! I appreciate your kind words!
I really like this! I think the stripes are wonderful and the bird is a perfect finishing touch.
Thank you very much for stopping by, Betsy!
It’s beautiful as it is – but if you were going to change it a third time ( lol – been there – done that ) you could always paint the legs the white color ( since you no longer have that blue? )
Regardless – I think it’s pretty close to perfection exactly how it is!!!
I’m sitting here typing in Montreal – and watching flurries fall – depressing as hell !
Visiting from Redoux
XOXO
